SWAG 4 LIFE

Akwaaba! Once again to our blog. Today’s post is about our newly formed youth club, SWAG 4 Life. SWAG is an acronym for Sexually Woke Advocates Ghana; the slogan for the club is ‘Become the Change!’

SWAG 4 Life is a youth initiative of DGG that seeks to interact with high schoolers and educate them on adolescent sexual and reproductive health related issues (matters concerning menstrual hygiene, abstinence, safe sexual behavior, teenage pregnancy, among others). Although this is the main reason why DGG created SWAG 4 Life, DGG intends to equip these students with useful skills such as social skills, study skills as well as how to be assertive. Again, DGG plans on creating a health center at schools that we work with; this health center will serve as a space where the DGG psychological team will offer counselling services to both students and teachers in need of psychological assistance.

The good news with this program is that the students are not the only persons that will benefit from SWAG 4 Life. We plan everything, to include our wonderful and hardworking teachers too. For the teachers, DGG plans to support them through workshops that will offer training on effective teaching skills, stress management, and how to identify students with educational, physical, and mental health challenges.

The first school DGG has started off this initiative with is the Billa Mahmud Memorial Future Leaders School in Teshie, Accra. The DGG team met with the Headmistress and some teachers at the school on 16th July 2021, to introduce SWAG 4 Life.

DGG got to meet and interact with the JHS pupils on the 13th of August 2021. The students signed up for the club and elected their executives.

Our maiden educational program was on the 17th of September. The theme of the program was Personal Hygiene and Grooming. The Junior High Schoolers were given tips on practicing good personal hygiene and how to manage the little grooming materials they have. There was a breakout session where the boys and girls were put into different groups where gender specific hygiene issues were addressed.

The DGG Psychological team gave the teachers a talk on Stress Management.

For this maiden session, we put up a call for donations and our generous donors greatly supported us with getting grooming materials for the Junior High Schoolers. The teachers also benefitted from these donations.

The items received were nicely packaged and given to the students.

purchased for the students.
