Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder

Most often, women attribute their lack of desire for sex to aging, hormonal changes, and tiredness as a result of a busy day. While this may be true, there could also be another reason underlying this especially if it is experienced often. A possible reason is the focus of our discussion today – female sexual interest or arousal disorder.

Female sexual interest or arousal disorder is defined as an absence of or significant decrease of mental interest in sex and/or a significant reduction in physical responsiveness to sexual cues in almost all sexual activities. In some cases, there could only be an absence of sexual fantasies, thoughts of sex, and desire to engage in sex, but the individual’s body may be sexually responsive and able to experience sexual pleasure. In other situations, there could be largely a lack of bodily response and pleasurable sensations to sexual cues. Explanations of this occurrence are psychosocial in nature, meaning they arise as a result of an interplay of social and psychological factors. These factors either originate or sustain the disorder. One of these factors include societies that hold sexually conservative views and purport sexual encounters are bad, which leads to feelings of guilt about sex and a reduction or suppression of sexual interest.  Depression, stress, and other mental conditions have also been found to relate to low desires for sex. Studies have also shown that women’s sexual desires are greatly influenced by the quality of the relationship with their partner, and poor communication about sexual preferences with one’s sexual partner.

To be clinically diagnosed with this dysfunction, you should have experienced the symptoms outlined for at least 6 months as per the guidelines of the DSM-5 accompanied by significant levels of distress. Sexually inactive people as well as those who are not anxious about this experience will not receive this clinical diagnosis.  This dysfunction affects a number of women and makes them feel helpless and in despair. However, there are treatment options for women who face this challenge. If you feel that your desire or your partner’s interest in sex is problematically low and are worried about it in any way, contact the Dialogue Genitalia Team for professional help.
