Maintaining Menstrual Hygiene

The menstrual cycle can be one of the most challenging times for females. The hormonal fluctuations and physical discomfort experienced over the course of 3-7 days each month can be overwhelming. Unfortunately, this already tasking period can be compounded by the risk of developing infections such as reproductive tract infections (RTIs), and the anxiety of potential odour issues in public spaces due to inadequate menstrual hygiene practices. To avoid this harm and embarrassment, it is advisable that females maintain menstrual hygiene while in their period.

Menstrual hygiene is the sanitary practices undertaken by females to manage their menstruation. It involves using the appropriate sanitary products, maintaining personal hygiene, and proper disposal of used menstrual products, to avoid contraction of infections. Menstrual hygiene is essential to promote overall well-being and comfort.

Menstruation is the natural process where the lining of the uterus (womb) is shed and leaves the body through the vagina as blood. It occurs mostly once a month and lasts between 3 to 7 days.

Here are some helpful tips and sanitary practices every female can follow to help them be comfortable during their period.

First and foremost, hand washing is a “must do” practice that must be undertaken during your period. Wash your hands before and after using the restroom, and before and after changing your sanitary products (pad, tampons, or other sanitary supplies).

It is very useful to keep track of your menstrual cycle to avoid any unexpected and uncomfortable situations such as period leaks in public, or not having access to necessary menstrual products during times your period pays you a surprise visit in public.

Also, always have a kit with menstrual products on hand to keep you prepared in case of any unexpected leaks during your period.  In a compact pouch, you can store an unscented pad, tampon, or menstrual cup, along with pocket-sized tissues, wet wipes, a disposal bag, pain relievers (especially for those with menstrual cramps), and hand sanitizer. If possible, consider including an extra pair of underwear for added peace of mind.

Furthermore, taking regular baths is highly recommended.  For optimal hygiene during menstruation, a quick shower in the morning is ideal, followed by a bath in the evening before bed.

In addition, it is important for females to dispose of menstrual hygiene products properly. After changing your pad or tampon, wrap it in tissue and place it in a non-transparent disposal bag before throwing it in the bin. Remember, never flush these products down the toilet.

Furthermore, make it a practice to change menstrual products regularly during the day. Typically, menstrual pads should be changed every 3-4 hours, while tampons should be changed every 4-8 hours. However, it is always best to listen to your body and change it when they feel full or uncomfortable. It is recommended to change pads before going to bed and right after waking up in the morning.

Wearing lightweight, breathable clothing (such as cotton underwear) is advisable.

Lastly, drink lots of water to stay hydrated!

Overall, incorporating good menstrual hygiene practices as habits helps protect you from infections and odours during your period and ensures your comfort and confidence.
