On April 7 every year, the world celebrates Health Day, an initiative introduced by the World Health Organization in 1950 to promote awareness about the health of every individual across the globe. Each year, a specific theme is adopted for this global celebration. This year’s theme is Health Promotion for Well-being, Equity and Sustainable Development.

As this theme suggests, there is the need to invest in the creation of conditions and healthy environments to maintain good overall well-being. While most people are aware of this fact, many do not pay close attention to these conditions and healthy environments. In today’s blog we have listed essential health promotion guidelines for those seeking to improve their overall well-being. They include the following:
- Maintain a balanced diet.
- Avoid excess intake of sugar.
- Drink a lot of water during the day.
- Avoid the consumption of excess energy drinks during the day. Preferably, make the consumption of energy drinks only an occasional indulgence.
- Get at least 8 hours of sleep, no less than 6 hours every night.
- Take comfort breaks during working hours. Do not overdo this though because you must put in your required amount of work for the day. A 5-minute break after every hour should be enough.
- Exercise more regularly. Walking briskly for 30 to 45 minutes a day, at least 3 times a week is enough.
- Engage in routine medical check-ups.
- Consult your primary healthcare professional today.
