Male Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder

Just like females, males also can have challenges with sexual desire. Researchers have found that it is very rare for males to have a reduced libido in isolation. There are always reasons for reduced libido in males which could be either medical or psychological. In today’s post, we are going to delve into understanding how psychological models explain male hypoactive sexual desire disorder

Male hypoactive sexual desire disorder condition can be described as the persistent lack of interest in sex, including lack of sexual thoughts, fantasies, and desire for sexual activity accompanied with significant levels of distress. Psychosocial models have been used to explain the occurrence of this condition. They state that the effect of many mental health problems such as depression and stress is decreased sexual desire. As such, people who are depressed or stressed are very likely to report decreased sexual desire. In addition to that, factors, such as guilt about sex, culturally restrictive attitudes, performance anxiety, worry about erectile functioning, relationship problems such as not finding one’s partner attractive, and partner ill health (either sexual or physical), have been found to greatly reduce one’s general desire to engage in sexual behaviors.

The DSM-5 only allows for a clinical diagnosis to be given when an individual experiences the symptoms associated with the condition for at least six months accompanied by significant levels of distress. However, it is important to note that this category excludes individuals who are not interested in sexual activities at all or are not worried about the occurrence. This dysfunction can be treated, and it is best to seek help from professionals rather than trying to figure out things on your own. If you have started experiencing any of the symptoms discussed and you think you need help, contact the Dialogue Genitalia Team for profession help.
